I have done &nbsp;extensive research within the sociolinguistic sub-field known as&nbsp;&#8216;Family Language Policy&#8217; and previously worked at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Irish Research Council, the Institute for the Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, and Soillse, the inter-university Scottish Gaelic research network, at the University of the Highlands and Islands (more details are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/our-research\/people\/languages-literatures-and-cultures\/cassandrasmith-christmas\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My interest\nin endangered languages began when I was six or seven years old. My parents\nwere always playing Scottish and Irish music at home, including songs in the Scottish\nGaelic and Irish languages. I quickly came to love many of those songs (although\nsaying that my favourite song in the world was \u2018<em>Fear A\u2019 Bh\u00e0ta\u2019<\/em> certainly didn\u2019t help me fit in with my peers at\nschool in Virginia, USA!).&nbsp; In my third\nyear of university, I took a class with Peter M\u00fclh\u00e4usler,\nUniversity of Adelaide, during study abroad,\nand since then, I have studied issues related to endangered languages,\nparticularly looking at language transmission in the family.&nbsp; I am the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/gp\/book\/9781137521804\"><em>Family\nLanguage Policy:&nbsp; Maintaining an\nEndangered Language in the Home<\/em><\/a> and co-editor <a href=\"https:\/\/edinburghuniversitypress.com\/book-gaelic-in-contemporary-scotland.html\"><em>Gaelic in Contemporary\nScotland:&nbsp;&nbsp;The Revitalisation of an Endangered Language<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/gp\/book\/9781137575579\"><em>New Speakers of\nMinority Languages: Linguistic Ideologies and Practices<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am co-editor\nof the FEL blog, and am keen to facilitate a space for speakers of endangered\nlanguages to share their stories, as well as create a forum for academics\nworking on minoritised languages to share their thoughts in an accessible,\nengaging way.&nbsp; If you have an idea for a\nblog post, don\u2019t hesitate to get in touch with me! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s post, we introduce another member of the FEL Executive Committee.
