After this, I lived for five years in Sicily, and then completed my\ngraduate studies in linguistics and communications at University of Illinois at\nUrbana-Champaign (<a href=\"https:\/\/illinois.edu\/\">UIUC<\/a>) where I now teach\nlinguistics and Italian language in the <a href=\"https:\/\/frit.illinois.edu\/directory\/profile\/derhemi\">Department of French\nand Italian<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I first encountered linguistic endangerment in\npractical terms, and then theoretically, during my years in Sicily, and have\noften visited two strongholds of the endangered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arb%C3%ABresh_language\">Arb\u00ebresh<\/a>\nlanguage (related to Albanian), Piana degli Albanesi and Contessa Entellina. I\nhave conducted sociolinguistic studies on Arb\u00ebresh (in 50 villages) that are\nnot just descriptive accounts of different linguistic systems of the language,\nbut are led by a theoretical framework of language endangerment guided by the pioneering\nstudies of Fishman and Dorian. In the last five years I have undertaken\nfieldwork on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arvanitika\">Arvanitika<\/a>,\nanother Albanian language spoken throughout Greece, working mostly in Attika,\nThives, Levadia and Hydra. Arvanitika is a <em>severely endangered<\/em> language;\nits speakers and socio-political conditions show traits that are completely\nopposite to those of Arb\u00ebresh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am also active in Albanian public communication\nas a writer, essayist, and literary critic, and have recently translated poetry\nand prose, including <em>Miele sul coltello<\/em> by Romeo \u00c7ollaku (co-translated\nfrom Albanian to Italian with Francesco Ferrari). I have served as a FEL\nexecutive committee member since 2018, and recently agreed to contribute\nregularly to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ogmios.org\/ogmios\/\">Ogmios<\/a> newsletter\nand assist Chris Moseley, the editor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this blog post, we introduce another member of the FEL executive committee.
